Alocasia baginda 'Silver Dragon' looks like something that belongs in a terrarium in a fantasy film—those thick, rigid leaves in pale silver-green stretched taut over a surface so heavily embossed with dark impressed venation that each leaf genuinely resembles dragon scales caught mid-shimmer. She's the more accessible sibling of the Dragon Scale, sharing that same extraordinary textural quality but rendered in soft silver that makes her feel somehow even more otherworldly. Demanding enough to keep you engaged, rewarding enough to make you want the whole dragon family—the Silver Dragon is the entry point into serious Alocasia collecting that nobody warns you about until it's too late.
Care Card
🌿 Light — Bright indirect preferred. The silver sheen needs good light to stay luminous; medium indirect light is tolerated but dulls the metallic quality; no direct sun, no dark corners under any circumstances.
💧 Water — Top inch dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain. Chunky well-draining mix non-negotiable; never mist directly onto the textured surface—water pools in the scales and invites fungal problems every single time without exception.
💨 Humidity — 60–75% required. Humidifier strongly recommended; she's from the limestone hills of Borneo and she remembers exactly what proper humidity feels like.
🌡️ Temperature — Stable 65–85°F. Never below 60°F; cold drafts cause immediate stress and the silver surface will document every lapse immediately and visibly.
🌱 Fertilizer — Half-strength balanced liquid every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer. Monthly in early fall. Nothing in winter.
⚠️ Toxicity — Toxic to pets and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause serious oral irritation if ingested.
🐣 Beginner Friendly? — Not quite. Humidity, good drainage, and stable warmth required—but she's a worthy and very achievable challenge for intermediate plant parents ready to commit to something genuinely extraordinary.
