Alocasia 'Dragon's Breath' is all business on top—deep glossy green—and pure drama underneath, where those large arching leaves smolder in burgundy-red to near-purple like they've been keeping a secret the whole plant is built around revealing. She's big, she's architectural, and she has absolutely no interest in being subtle about any of it—dropping leaves when moved, sulking through winter, and demanding humidity like it's written into her care contract in bold. Give her warmth, a bright spot, and the admiration she clearly deserves, and she'll fill a room with the kind of presence that makes people stop mid-sentence and ask "wait, what IS that?"
Care Card
🌿 Light — Bright indirect essential. Burgundy undersides intensify with more light; direct sun scorches the glossy upper surface; low light fades the drama entirely and she will not pretend otherwise.
💧 Water — Top 1–2 inches dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain. Moist but never waterlogged; well-draining aroid mix; reduce significantly in winter when she's sulking anyway.
💨 Humidity — 60–75% required. Humidifier recommended; misting alone won't cut it and she will communicate this through browning edges immediately.
🌡️ Temperature — Stable 65–85°F. Never below 60°F; cold stress shows first in the burgundy coloration fading—the most visible possible way to document your mistakes.
🌱 Fertilizer — Half-strength balanced liquid every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer. Monthly in early fall. Nothing in winter.
⚠️ Toxicity — Toxic to pets and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause serious oral irritation if ingested.
🐣 Beginner Friendly? — No. Humidity, consistent care, and stable warmth required—best for intermediate to experienced growers who appreciate the drama and are prepared to earn it.
