Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana Red Vein' is the gothic aristocrat of the Jewel Alocasia family—she shows up in dark satin-green shield-shaped leaves with dramatic red-purple veins running through them like blood vessels, then casually flips her leaves to reveal deep burgundy-maroon undersides because subtlety is for amateurs. What makes her truly extra is the puckered, corrugated texture between her veins that creates a quilted effect, giving each leaf a sculptural, almost embossed appearance like someone pressed velvet into botanical form.
Related to the compact longiloba clan but capable of growing significantly larger (this is the giant among Jewel Alocasias when she's feeling ambitious), she develops her signature red veining as she matures—young plants start more subdued and gradually crank up the drama. Rare, expensive, and notoriously sensitive to shipping (expect leaf loss but she'll bounce back from her rhizomes), she demands Jewel Alocasia conditions: 80°F days, 70°F nights, humidity that would make your hair frizz, and bright indirect light.
LIGHT: Bright indirect light essential; no direct sun (scorches leaves); needs brightness to maintain color intensity and growth
WATER: Water when top 1-2 inches dry; keep consistently moist but never soggy; very sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering
HUMIDITY: High humidity critical (60-80%+); use humidifier or pebble tray; mist carefully; low humidity = crispy brown edges
FERTILIZER: Balanced liquid fertilizer monthly spring/summer at half strength; heavy feeder during active growth; no fertilizer in winter
TEMPERATURE: Warm 70-85°F (21-29°C) ideal, prefers 80°F days/70°F nights; never below 60°F; extremely sensitive to cold and temperature fluctuations
TOXICITY: Toxic to pets and humans; contains calcium oxalate crystals causing mouth/throat irritation, swelling, vomiting
Beginner Friendly? No—rare, expensive, sensitive to shipping/environment, demands high humidity/warmth, red veining develops slowly, prone to pests
HOW OUR SHIPPING WORKS We ship all live plants with custom packing, insulation, and lots of cushioning so they arrive in the best condition possible. Shipping rates are based on the packed weight of your order (plants + soil + pot + box + insulation). This helps us cover the real cost of getting breakable, living things safely to you.
In cold weather, we strongly recommend adding a Heat Pack add-on for each shipment. Heat packs are priced separately and add additional weight to your box.
SHIPPING NOTE: Shipping includes wrapping and insulation. Heat packs are not included by default—please add a Heat Pack add-on to your cart for cold-weather shipping.
Shipping Days are Monday-Wednesday to avoid weekend and holiday delays.
PLEASE NOTE: What you see is the vibe — not the exact plant. 🌿
Each plant has its own personality (some a little more dramatic than others).
Leaf shape, size, and variegation will vary, but pot size is consistent.
