🌿 Light — Bright indirect, no direct sun. Those dramatic spined surfaces need good light to display their full sculptural quality; low light flattens the effect and produces smaller, less impressively armored leaves.
💧 Water — Consistently moist but never waterlogged. Those spines make her look tough but her roots are as rot-prone as any Begonia—water at the base, drain thoroughly, never let her sit in moisture.
💨 Humidity — 70–80% required. High humidity is essential—but never mist directly onto those spined surfaces, moisture trapped at the base of the cystolyth hairs causes rot faster than almost anything else.
🌡️ Temperature — 65–80°F. Never below 62°F. Stable tropical warmth keeps those extraordinary armored leaves pushing consistently; temperature fluctuations stress her immediately.
🪴 Soil — Light, airy, well-draining mix with good moisture retention. Fine roots, consistent moisture, excellent drainage—get all three right and she thrives.
🌱 Fertilizer — Quarter to half-strength balanced liquid every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer. Light and consistent; sensitive to over-fertilizing like most Begonias.
⚠️ Toxicity — Toxic to pets and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause oral irritation if ingested.
🐣 Beginner Friendly? — No. High humidity requirements and the no-misting rule make this one for growers with a proper humid setup—but in the right environment she is one of the most extraordinary small plants in the hobby.
