Begonia masoniana 'Iron Cross' is the Begonia that made a single bold graphic decision and committed to it entirely—those broad, heavily textured, puckered leaves carry a dramatic dark brown to maroon cross-shaped marking against bright apple-green so precisely centered and so consistently reproduced on every single leaf it looks less like a natural pattern and more like a botanical stamp applied with absolute confidence and zero variation. She's one of the most graphically distinctive houseplants available at any experience level, the kind of specimen that makes people stop and look twice because the pattern is so precise and so consistently executed it seems almost impossible that nature produced it without editorial oversight. Graphic, textured, and entirely committed to the cross.

Care Card

🌿 Light — Bright indirect preferred. That bold iron cross marking stays most graphically defined and the apple-green base most vivid with good light; low light causes the cross to fade toward plain brown-green and the whole precise graphic composition loses its striking definition.

💧 Water — Let the top inch dry between waterings, then water thoroughly at the base. Never on those textured puckered leaves—water trapped in the heavily textured surface causes fungal issues that show immediately and permanently on something this graphically precise. Drain thoroughly; she's rot-prone when overwatered.

💨 Humidity — 50–65% preferred. More tolerant of average home humidity than many Rex-type Begonias; a pebble tray keeps those textured leaves looking most vivid without requiring a full humidifier commitment.

🌡️ Temperature — 65–80°F. Never below 60°F. Stable warmth keeps those iron cross-marked leaves pushing consistently; cold temps cause leaf drop that is both immediate and disproportionate on something this graphically extraordinary.

🌱 Fertilizer — Quarter to half-strength balanced liquid every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer. Light and consistent; the Iron Cross is sensitive to over-fertilizing and will brown at the leaf edges to communicate her displeasure in the most visible and most unfortunate way possible.

⚠️ Toxicity — Toxic to pets and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause oral irritation if ingested.

🐣 Beginner Friendly? — Getting there. More forgiving than many decorative Begonias with a graphic payoff that genuinely justifies the attention—intermediate growers who nail the watering and keep water off those textured leaves will find the Iron Cross one of the most distinctively graphic and rewarding Begonias in the hobby.
