The Arabian Coffee plant is the one you grow for the story as much as the foliage—those glossy, deeply veined, rich dark green leaves are genuinely beautiful on their own, but the knowledge that this is the actual plant that produces the world's most consumed beverage gives every cup you'll never harvest from your houseplant a certain philosophical weight. She's surprisingly elegant as an indoor plant, compact and well-behaved with a lush tropical presence, and with enough light and patience she'll even produce fragrant white flowers and eventually those famous red coffee cherries. 🌿 Light — Bright indirect to some gentle direct morning sun. Those glossy leaves need good light to stay rich and dark; low light produces pale, sparse growth and eliminates any chance of flowering or fruit production.
💧 Water — Keep consistently moist but never waterlogged. Coffee plants like consistent moisture—let the top inch dry out then water thoroughly; they're more sensitive to drought than most tropical houseplants and will drop leaves to make their point.
💨 Humidity — Moderate to high, 50–70% preferred. A tropical understory plant that appreciates humidity; a pebble tray or humidifier keeps the glossy leaves looking their best and reduces the risk of spider mites which are her primary nemesis.
🌡️ Temperature — 65–80°F. Never below 55°F. Stable warmth keeps her growing consistently; cold drafts and temperature swings cause leaf drop faster than almost anything else.
🪴 Soil — Well-draining, slightly acidic mix. A coffee-specific or African violet mix works well; she prefers slightly acidic conditions and good drainage in equal measure.
🌱 Fertilizer — Balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks in spring and summer. Acidic fertilizer formulations support the best growth and deepest leaf color; reduce in fall and stop in winter.
⚠️ Toxicity — Toxic to cats and dogs. The raw coffee cherries and leaves contain caffeine and other compounds that cause vomiting, tremors, and elevated heart rate; keep away from pets.
🐣 Beginner Friendly? — Getting there. More forgiving than her tropical appearance suggests—intermediate growers with a bright window will find her a rewarding and genuinely conversation-worthy addition to any collection.
