Plant Description

Philodendron verrucosum is the velvet Philodendron that makes collectors audibly gasp when they see it in person—those large, heart-shaped leaves are covered in a genuine deep green velvet surface with iridescent golden-bronze hairs along the petioles and pale green to white venation that glows against the dark velvety surface like something illuminated from within. The undersides flush deep burgundy-red, which means every time a breeze catches those leaves and flips them, the whole plant reveals a second extraordinary color story happening underneath. Velvety, iridescent, and entirely serious about its humidity requirements in a way that should surprise no one given its Ecuadorian cloud forest origins.

Care Card

🌿 Light — Bright indirect, consistently. That deep velvety surface and luminous venation display their full iridescent quality with good light; low light dulls both and produces smaller, less dramatically colored leaves.

💧 Water — Let the top inch dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain. Chunky well-draining aroid mix essential—velvety Philodendrons punish overwatering quietly and expensively; never let roots sit in moisture.

💨 Humidity — 70–85% required. Cloud forest native with predictably high standards; humidifier is non-negotiable. Never mist directly onto the velvety surface—water marks on velvet are permanent and deeply unfortunate on something this beautiful.

🌡️ Temperature — 65–80°F. Prefers cooler temperatures than many Philodendrons; never below 60°F but also dislikes excessive heat above 85°F—she's a cloud forest plant and she remembers the altitude fondly.

🌱 Fertilizer — Half-strength balanced liquid every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer. Monthly in early fall. Nothing in winter; consistent feeding supports the large velvety leaves that make new leaf day genuinely worth anticipating.

⚠️ Toxicity — Toxic to pets and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause oral irritation and vomiting if ingested.

🐣 Beginner Friendly? — No. Velvet surface, extreme humidity requirements, and temperature sensitivity make this one for experienced collectors with the setup to match—but it is absolutely worth every bit of that commitment.

HOW OUR SHIPPING WORKS

We ship all live plants with custom packing, insulation, and lots of cushioning so they arrive in the best condition possible. Shipping rates are based on the packed weight of your order (plants + soil + pot + box + insulation). This helps us cover the real cost of getting breakable, living things safely to you.

In cold weather, we strongly recommend adding a Heat Pack add-on for each shipment. Heat packs are priced separately and add additional weight to your box.

SHIPPING NOTE: Shipping includes wrapping and insulation. Heat packs are not included by default—please add a Heat Pack add-on to your cart for cold-weather shipping. Shipping Days are Monday–Wednesday to avoid weekend and holiday delays.

PLEASE NOTE: What you see is the vibe — not the exact plant. 🌿 Each plant has its own personality (some a little more dramatic than others). Leaf shape, size, and variegation will vary, but pot size is consistent.
